Lucy Davis, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the original British version of The Office, has revealed she has incurable stage 4 breast cancer.
The 53-year-old actress said she received the diagnosis 18 months ago. Since then, the cancer spread to her bones – spine, right hip, and ribs. She explained that the disease was detected when it was too late for chemotherapy.
In a statement shared on Instagram on Tuesday, Aug. 11, Lucy Davis said she is focusing on making the most of her remaining time and approaching life with humor.
"As of now, I'm trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can."
Physical barriers that Lucy Davis has include pain, which makes it difficult for her to walk or stand for extended periods of time. She often uses a wheelchair, and even said that people should not hesitate to help her out if they notice that she is using one.
The actress, who is the daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, said humor has been one of the most important sources of support throughout her illness. She asked friends and family to continue joking with her rather than treating her as a sick person.

"I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens. And cancer has not disappointed in that regard; there's a lot I have learned from it, and I'm grateful for that. As some of you will know, the pain can really be something else. Standing and walking for too long a time can be hard, and I need to use a wheelchair sometimes (so if you see me toddling around in one, feel free to give me a push!)."
The actress then gave a shout-out to those who are undergoing the same experience as her.
"For those of you on a similar journey to mine, I do wish you well. Cancer asks a lot from us, physically and mentally. And we all get to do it however we choose."
Lucy Davis says she is "at peace" with her cancer
For Lucy Davis, she is at peace with what lies ahead and is more concerned about the impact on her family than on herself.
"There's nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you're unwell. I'm not scared of whatever comes next. I'm at peace with it. I'll see my Gracie [her late dog] sooner than expected, and for me leaving my physical body just means going home. Any and all grieving is for my family; it's far harder for them than for me."

Lucy Davis became known for playing receptionist Dawn in The Office, the BBC comedy created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.
She later appeared in Shaun of the Dead, Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and spent nearly a decade playing Hayley Jordan on BBC Radio 4’s The Archers.
Despite her diagnosis, Lucy Davis said she hopes to continue acting and working for animal rights. She described acting as one of the biggest joys of her life.
