The emergency department at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center is gearing up for a major staffing change.

*The Pitt* is saying goodbye to Supriya Ganesh ahead of its third season, * *has learned. The actress, who has played the anxious and compassionate Dr. Samira Mohan across the first two seasons of the hit medical drama, will exit the show as part of a creative decision regarding her character's storyline.

The departure mirrors the experience of real-life doctors, nurses and students within a teaching hospital, which often includes a revolving door of staff. It also marks a natural next step for Dr. Mohan, whose future at the Pittsburgh hospital has already come into question. Much of the second season has seen Mohan question her capabilities in the ED and consider alternate paths forward in her medical career.

But before fans pull out the torches and pitchforks, the bittersweet news does come with a silver lining: Dr. Mohan's exit leaves an open spot in the ED that a certain night shift resident might be filling.

Ayesha Harris, who has thus far recurred as Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to a series regular for *The Pitt*'s third season. Dr. Ellis has already proven herself a confident, no-nonsense medical professional after stepping in to help the day shift doctors with season 1's mass casualty event, a brief appearance that quickly made her a favorite among fans. Recent episodes saw Ellis offer Dr. Mel King (Taylor Dearden) a much-needed confidence boost, cementing her fan-fave status.

Executive producer John Wells previously warned viewers that staffing changes were an inevitability on *The Pitt,* commenting on the matter after season 1 regular Tracy Ifeachor (Dr. Heather Collins) departed the show last year.

"Look, the show is set at a teaching hospital," Wells told *The Hollywood Reporter* in August. "And if you’re a fourth-year resident in a teaching hospital, your time there is done at the end of that year."

He continued, "Not to scare any of the other castmembers, but people don’t stay at these hospitals forever. They’re going to roll off, and that will be part of the evolution of the show. We’re not committed to doing a year every season as we go on, but we can’t say that we’re going to be true to the medicine and teaching hospitals and maintain the same cast for the entire time."

New episodes of *The Pitt *premiere Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
