Helena Chard, a renowned royal family expert, told Fox News Digital that the move of stripping royal titles is “rare.” She further stated that the Freedom of the City of York title was first revoked from ex-Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. This is a ceremonial honor, a symbolic recognition given to notable individuals.

Chard further said, “It is largely a ceremonial honour and will not change Andrew and Sarah’s lives. However, it highlights their fall from grace, their reputational damage, diminished status and, considering they were the former Duke and Duchess of York, the removal of the titles is a big deal. It certainly highlights that actions have consequences.”

According to one royal expert, the City Council’s discussion on whether to revoke Ferguson’s honorary title was unusually short.
