(NewsNation) — Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan has won the state's Democratic Senate primary, Decision Desk HQ projects, defeating Rep. Angie Craig in a closely watched contest between the party's progressive and moderate wings.
Current Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith is not seeking reelection, which opened the door for either candidate to compete in the general election this November.
Flanagan had endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders and other progressive leaders, while Craig was backed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Pete Buttigieg.

On the Republican side, former sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya has won the GOP primary, defeating former NBA player Royce White and former Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze.
Flanagan and Tafoya will now face off in November for the seat being vacated by Smith.
