Her mother, Diane, caught the baby during the surprise delivery and described the moment as unforgettable

A mom was in for a shocking surprise when she unexpectedly delivered a baby.

When Katie Brown, a professional dancer based in the U.K., woke up in the middle of the night, she thought she was experiencing bad period pains. However, when the pain persisted, she decided to call the paramedics. As she was walking to the ambulance, she felt something drop out of her pajamas and was shocked to see that she had given birth to her second baby, a son named William.

"I woke up, and I thought, I'm having period pains. So, I went and got some paracetamol, and then I couldn't sit down. I was like, 'Oh my gosh, these are really bad. Oh my goodness,' " Brown recalled during her recent appearance on This Morning. "So, then it got to about 7 a.m., and I thought, 'Oh, I can't do this anymore.'"

Brown said she told her daughter to get her mom, Diane, because she was in so much pain that she wanted to go to the emergency room. She said her mom came into the room and thought that she could potentially be experiencing appendicitis, admitting that the possibility that she might be in labor never crossed their mind.

"We rang the ambulance, and then they said, 'Oh, we can't come for 4 hours.' But I think they could hear me kind of being like, 'I need to get somewhere. I need to do something,' " she said. "They turned up [around 9 a.m.], walked me out onto my street, and then I had to drop to my hands and knees, and he was born at 20 [minutes] to 10 a.m."

The proud grandma, who sat beside her daughter and her new grandson on the show, shared that she ended up being the person to catch the baby's head in that moment.

"I could see something coming out of the shape," she shared. "I went down on my knees behind and [caught him]."

In the moment, Brown didn't think she was giving birth to a baby. She told the daytime talk show hosts that she instead thought something was happening in her bowels.

"I was facing a lamp post, and when my mom caught him, we just heard him. He just cried straight away," she said. "And I just remember facing this lamp post thinking, 'Oh my goodness.'"

When she told her partner Conner the exciting and unexpected news, Brown said he was "shocked," but he was also instrumental in calming her and her mom down in the midst of everything that was happening.

"He was saying, 'You're doing really well, Diane. You're doing so well.' And I'm thinking, 'I'm not the one having the baby. I'm [laughter] just holding it. I'm just holding it,' " Diane said as she laughed with Brown. Then, Brown added, "But no, he was great. He's been so supportive."

Since the new mom rode in a separate ambulance from her little one, she didn't immediately find out the sex of the baby. Her mom recalled being halfway to the hospital before they found out it was a boy, which made the moment even more beautiful because they don't typically welcome boys in their family.

Brown decided to name the baby after her dad, recalling the first interaction they had with each other after the shocking turn of events. "He was at the door with my little girl and ... then my mom went, 'It's a baby,' " Brown shared of the first interaction. "And my dad was like, 'What?' But no, it was great."
