Julie Andrews says she won’t be in The Princess Diaries 3.

The 90-year-old icon believes it’s “too late for me to do it.”

Anne Hathaway announced the sequel back in 2024.

The Princess Diaries 3 is going to be without one of its queens.

Two years ago, Anne Hathaway confirmed that she was returning for the threequel, but her legendary costar and onscreen grandmother Julie Andrews is closing the book on her chapter in the franchise.

“I’m not going to be in it,” the 90-year-old actress told TODAY.com. “I think the story is slightly different, and I’m not quite sure how they’re dealing with that. But it’s too late for me to do it. I think the story has to continue in Princess Mia (Hathaway). It’s her story. It’s not really mine.”

Adapted from Meg Cabot’s book series and directed by the late Garry Marshall, 2001’s The Princess Diaries served as Hathaway’s breakout moment. The Odyssey actress starred as Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary San Fransisco teenager who suddenly discovers that she is the sole heir to the small European kingdom of Genovia. Andrews played Clarisse, Mia’s grandmother and the queen regent of Genovia.

Following the film’s $165 million return at the box office, Marshall reunited with Hathaway and Andrews for 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. At the end of the Shonda Rhimes-scripted sequel, Clarisse stepped down and Mia became queen.

Earlier this year, Hathaway Entertainment Weekly on the status of Princess Diaries 3. “We’re constantly working on it,” she said. “Expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.”

Crazy Rich Asians writer Adele Lim previously signed on direct the third installment, and Cabot recently revealed that she’s seen many iterations of a script over the years, but she just went through her “favorite.”

“I read a script, and it was amazing,” she declared. “I told them not to send anymore, because I love it so much ... Fingers crossed that’s the one they’re going to use, but it’s a really fun idea, and I’m one hundred percent behind it.”

Andrews’ admission that she won’t be in Princess Diaries 3 might not be so surprising considering she hasn’t appeared on the big screen since 2010’s The Tooth Fairy. The Oscar-winning actress will be the subject of a documentary coming next year to Disney+.
