President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.

Delegations from the U.S. and Iran entered negotiations in June aimed at a war-ending deal based on a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries.

The U.S. and Iran have nonetheless continued to exchange strikes, with the strategic Strait of Hormuz the primary flashpoint.

There were eight crossings of the strategic waterway on Aug. 10, according to latest data from maritime intelligence firm Kpler.Traffic through Bab el-Mandeb Strait -- which sits at the southern end of the Red Sea and where commercial shipping has been under fire from the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen -- remained stable at 36 confirmed crossings on Monday, according to Kpler.

In a pre-taped interview with right wing media outlet "Real America's Voice," President Donald Trump again defended his strategy in the ongoing war with Iran and suggested that Tehran's economic situation is unsustainable.The president's comments focused on potential economic measures to pressure Iran amid the apparent negotiating stalemate over the Strait of Hormuz. "Just bop along and look how bad they're doing, because they've got 300% inflation, they have no value. Their currency has almost no value. They're not paying their soldiers. Their soldiers are leaving," Trump said."So just keep that going because that's not sustainable," Trump said of potential next steps, adding that the U.S. could "hit them really really hard.""So economically, they are a mess. They can't borrow money. We control their money, what they had, which is a lot. They had a lot, and we have total control of it. I'm their banker," Trump said.Trump also again denied that the U.S. is struggling with missile munitions shortages. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said at a press conference on Monday that there are no direct negotiations ongoing between Iran and the U.S.Existing communications are limited only to the exchange of messages through intermediaries, Baqaei said. He added that Tehran's focus is now "on advancing negotiations with Oman to determine the final destination of the shipping route" through the Strait of Hormuz."Management and security of the Strait of Hormuz is Iran's responsibility," Baqaei said, adding that Tehran will not allow the strategic waterway to reopen unless the U.S. agrees to key Iranian demands, among them reconstruction funding and the lifting of sanctions."According to the agreements, the previous traffic routes will be replaced by a middle and safe route, which will act as a temporary route until a new traffic separation plan is reached," Baqaei said of the plan under discussion by Iran and Oman."The main goal of the ongoing diplomatic negotiations is to reach a lasting understanding with Oman to establish complete security in this vital waterway," he said.

Aug 10, 2:12 AM7 killed in Houthi attack on Mocha port, Yemen's army says

The Yemeni Armed Forces said in a statement that at least four soldiers and three civilians were killed in an attack on the Red Sea port city of Mocha by the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels on Sunday.At least 30 other people were injured, the army's official spokesperson -- Col. Majid Abdullah Al-Nuzaili -- said in the statement.The attack involved the use of drones and missiles, Nuzaili said, and targeted "civilian infrastructure, employee residences and their families, power generation stations and civilian sites within the city, in addition to military sites," the spokesperson added.
