Gillian Anderson anchors the new PBS drama Trespasses, a four-part adaptation of Louise Kennedy’s debut novel. A recently dropped trailer reveals a love affair that collides head-on with the sectarian violence of 1970s Northern Ireland.

Set in 1975 just outside Belfast, the series follows Cushla (Lola Petticrew), a Catholic schoolteacher who meets Michael (Tom Cullen), an older, married Protestant barrister. Their chemistry ignites inside the family pub where Cushla works evenings, a cramped space shared by locals and stationed British soldiers. The Trespasses trailer wastes no time establishing the peril. A relationship like this spells danger, and both characters recognize it from the start.

Gillian Anderson plays Gina, Cushla’s mother. The trailer sketches her as an alcoholic with a sharp tongue. Scenes flash between intimate confrontations and the wider unease of a town where deadly consequences follow. Martin McCann, Emily Taaffe, Oisín Thompson, and Barry Ward fill out the cast.

Kennedy’s novel gained status through its granular depiction of ordinary lives trapped inside extraordinary circumstances. The PBS’ Trespasses preserves that claustrophobic texture. Characters move through rooms humming with paranoia. Soldiers drink alongside the people they police and more.

Trespasses releases on Sunday, September 20, with episodes rolling out weekly until October 11 at 10 p.m. ET. Viewers can also stream the full run immediately through PBS Passport and PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video.

The original U.K. broadcast on Channel 4 got strong reactions for its refusal to soften the period’s brutality, and PBS programming executive Maria Bruno Ruiz indicates the American presentation will keep that edge intact. “There wasn’t a single false moment for me in watching this poignantly beautiful series of love and heartbreak,” Ruiz said. “The outstanding creative team behind the series and the authentic approach to Louise Kennedy’s acclaimed work, left me spellbound and I was taken away to time and place.”
