13 Celebrities Who Have Opened Up About Their Sobriety

Many of Hollywood’s sober stars have spoken openly about their journeys to sobriety with the public.
Jamie Lee Curtis, Dax Shepard and Anthony Hopkins, for example, are among the celebrities who have been sober for decades. The latter actor penned a memoir titled We Did OK, Kid that chronicled his career and “the low points in his personal life,” including his addiction, in 2025 — the same year that he celebrated 50 years of sobriety.
Fight Club actor Brad Pitt, meanwhile, stopped drinking for seven years and recently revealed that he is no longer sober, explaining he now drinks alcohol “in a more restrained manner.”
“I got overconfident a couple times, went, Yep, nope, not good for me,” he said in an August 2026 interview with Esquire. “Not in big quantities.”

Brad Pitt

Pitt initially quit drinking in 2016 after he and Angelina Jolie split. Since then, the F1 actor has been open about his sobriety journey. In August 2026, he revealed to Esquire that he is no longer sober and now drinks alcohol “in a more restrained manner.”
“I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon,” Pitt told the publication. “ I can have a few. But I can’t have a lot. I have to be professional about it.”

Jamie Lee Curtis

Curtis celebrated 27 years of sobriety in February 2026. The Freakier Friday star credited her late friend Richard Lewis with helping her find recovery.
“The miracle of sobriety is that it just takes one other person to relate to how you’re feeling and THAT can change everything,” Curtis wrote on Instagram.
In 2022, the actress penned the forward to Elisa Hallerman’s book, Soulbriety: A Plan to Heal Your Trauma, Overcome Addiction, and Reconnect with Your Soul.
“The overall message is that we are enough,” she wrote.

Eminem

Eminem marked 18 years of sobriety in April 2026. The rapper was previously addicted to prescription medication and alcohol and experienced a near-fatal overdose in 2007.
“After the overdose, I came home going, ‘Yo, bro, I need something ... I’m going to die if I don’t do something,’ ” the rapper said in the 2025 documentary STANS.

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson stopped drinking in 2017 and later wrote a song inspired by her sobriety called “Give It All Away.” The mom of three explained the story behind the track during a concert in Highland, Calif. on June 1, 2026.
“I didn’t understand all of the traumas that I was holding onto,” Simpson can be heard saying in fan footage obtained by TMZ. “It was really painful, and once I started searching in myself to find what I could reveal, because I became somebody that I was afraid of.”
“It wasn’t until a year later that I realized that the drinking wasn’t numbing my pain, it was actually causing more pain,” she added. “It was just a crutch that wasn’t working.”

Angela White

Angela White, who was previously known as Blac Chyna, got sober in 2022 after years of experiencing alcohol addiction. The reality TV star is now the author of a forthcoming memoir, Sober Mine: Letting Go of Blac Chyna and Living My Faith.
“This book is proof that no matter how far you fall, healing is possible. It’s a piece of my heart that I’m giving to the world in hopes that someone else realizes they are never too far gone,” the mom of two said in a press release shared with PEOPLE.

Paris Jackson

Paris Jackson has spoken candidly about how her experience with addiction once compromised her “moral compass.” The model has been sober since 2020 and called her journey to sobriety “very hard” in a January 2026 Instagram Reel.
“getting sober ain’t always the indication that life is perfect,” she wrote in the post’s caption. “... i had to learn to live life on life’s terms.”

Dax Shepard

The Parenthood actor’s journey to sobriety began after a trip to Hawaii where he was “hammered and doing drugs the whole time,” an experience he recounted on Off Camera with Sam Jones. Shepard has also been open about relapsing over the years, most recently in 2020.

Kristen Bell, who has been married to Shepard since 2013, later celebrated her husband’s sobriety in a 2025 Instagram post.
“This is what 21 years of sobriety looks like. Lots of hugging. Hugging everyone and everything. Hugging life,” she captioned the post.

Tom Holland

Spider-Man star Tom Holland’s sobriety journey was prompted by his participation in dry January in 2022.
“I couldn’t quite wrap my head around how much I was struggling without booze in that first month — and It really scared me,” he said during an October 2024 episode of the Rich Roll podcast. “I decided, as a sort of punishment to myself, that I would do February as well as January.”
Holland stayed sober until June 1, his birthday, at which point he “really started feeling the benefits” of a sober life. The actor has been sober ever since and even started his own non-alcoholic drink line, Bero.
“When I ventured into the non-alcoholic world, I realized there was a void for a true, premium brand. I ultimately created Bero for myself because I was craving a product that helped me feel included,” he told PEOPLE in January 2025.

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale hit “rock bottom” at the age of 32 and subsequently decided to “do everything [she] could to get sober” on Jan. 2, 2022. Two years later, the Pretty Little Liars alum was awarded the 2024 Humanitarian Award from Friendly House, a women’s addiction recovery center in Los Angeles.
“When I got sober, my intention was never to be the poster child of sobriety,” Hale told PEOPLE at the time. “But when I began speaking about it, it came from a place of needing to heal and take my power back.”

Anthony Hopkins

Hopkins has been sober since the 1970s. The Nixon star recounted the moment he realized he was an alcoholic in his 2025 memoir We Did OK, Kid andcelebrated 50 years of sobriety shortly after the book was published.
“... 50 years ago today I was nearly killed by driving my car in a drunken blackout,” Hopkins said in an Instagram video celebrating the milestone anniversary. “... So anyone out there who’s got a little problem with having too much, check it out because life is much better.”

Elton John

Elton John celebrated 36 years of sobriety six months after launching his non-alcoholic wine brand, Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs, in January 2026.
“36 years sober today. Raising a 0% glass to life. Grateful for every single day,” he captioned an Instagram post marking the anniversary.
The legendary British musician previously opened up about his journey to sobriety in a May 2019 interview with Variety.
“I am a survivor,” he told the publication. “I’ve survived a lot of things. Life is full of pitfalls, even when you’re sober. I can deal with them now because I don’t have to run away and hide.”

Rob Lowe

Parks and Recreation alum Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, are both sober. The two actors stopped drinking in 1990 and 2018, respectively. John later credited his dad and his mom, Sheryl Berkoff, for helping him in his sobriety journey.
“To be completely honest and serious about it, I’m eternally grateful to have supportive parents who were there for me in a moment when I needed help,” he told PEOPLE at the 2023 premiere of Netflix’s Unstable.
Rob, who starred in Unstable opposite his son, told PEOPLE that “the number one thing I know is, until someone is ready, until they’re ready — not until you’re ready, until they’re ready — it’s not going to happen.”

Summer House star Carl Radke has described sobriety as a life-changing experience.
“It’s changed my life completely,” he told PEOPLE in July 2026 after getting sober in January 2021. “The last few years of my drinking and partying, I was in a bad place and really struggling.”
Radke also explained that his brother Curtis’ death in August 2020 “was a huge catalyst to take a look in the mirror.”
“It didn’t happen overnight and I didn’t immediately get sober,” he said. “It took some time for me to realize that I had a problem, and then find the right support and people to connect with. But I’m really grateful because I was so bad that my last day of drinking and using was a really dark, rock bottom day.”
